First, which kind of rapid prototyping do you mean?

This phrase covers two unrelated disciplines, and mixing them is why some guides feel oddly disjointed.

Digital rapid prototyping means building an interactive model of a software interface so you can test flows and align a team before code is written. That is what this article covers.

Physical rapid prototyping means additive manufacturing and subtractive machining: 3D printing methods like FDM, SLA, and SLS, or CNC milling and laser cutting. It shares a name and almost nothing else. Different buyers, different budgets, different vocabulary. If that is what brought you here, this is not the right guide, and any article that tries to cover both in one list is serving neither well.

What is rapid prototyping in UX?

Rapid prototyping is the practice of building a rough, interactive version of a product quickly, putting it in front of people, and changing it based on what you learn, all before committing engineering time. The word doing the work is rapid. A prototype that takes three weeks has stopped being a prototype and started being unpaid production work.

The thing most guides skip is that prototypes come in fidelity levels, and the level determines both the tool and the question you can answer.

Low fidelity means boxes and arrows. Sketches, wireframes, and flow diagrams. These answer structural questions: is this the right number of steps, does this information belong on one screen or two. They should take minutes, and users should never see them without context because they will comment on the grey boxes rather than the flow.

Mid fidelity means real layout, real hierarchy, placeholder content. Clickable but not beautiful. This is where most usability testing should happen, because testers focus on whether they can complete the task rather than on the colour of the button.

High fidelity means it looks and moves like the product. Real copy, real components, real transitions. Use this for stakeholder sign-off, motion decisions, and anything you are handing to engineering.

Functional is the fidelity level that only became practical in 2026. The prototype is not a simulation of software, it is software: real code, real data, sometimes a real database. Time to first clickable decides whether the tool gets used at all, because a prototyping tool that takes an afternoon to set up will lose to a whiteboard every time. Handoff quality decides whether the prototype saved time or simply moved the confusion downstream.

Because layouts use real Flexbox and Grid rather than proprietary layout constructs, what an engineer inspects maps directly to what they will write. Designers who understand web layout find this natural. Designers who do not will need a short adjustment period.

Where it struggles: prototyping is more basic than Figma's, with limited support for variables and conditional interactions. The plugin ecosystem is small. Self-hosting means somebody on your side maintains it, which is a real cost even though the licence is free.

Where it struggles: Merge requires a design system that already exists in code, which is precisely the constraint that excludes most teams who want it. Where it struggles: it is a web tool. Native app prototyping is not its purpose, and using it for one is fighting the product. As a UI design tool for complex application interfaces it is weaker than Figma, and teams that try to run their whole design system through it usually come back.

This category did not meaningfully exist when most competing lists were written, which is why most of them do not mention it. It is now where the fastest movement in prototyping is happening.

Figma Make: best AI prototyping inside an existing design system

Figma Make turns a prompt into a working interactive prototype, and its advantage over every standalone AI tool is context. It knows your components, your variables, and your styles, so what it generates uses your actual design system rather than generic AI defaults.

That is the difference between an AI prototype you can show a stakeholder and one you have to apologise for. Generic AI design tools produce something plausible in a house style that is nobody's house style. Figma Make produces something that looks like your product because it is built from your product's parts.

Where it struggles: it is gated. AI features are not available on the free Starter plan, so you need a paid Full seat to use it at all. Figma began enforcing AI credit limits in March 2026, with overage billed per credit, and heavy generation burns credits fast enough that power users report meaningful extra monthly cost. It is also strongest when a design system already exists, and least impressive when you are starting from nothing.

Best for: teams already on paid Figma with an established component library.

Skip it if: you are on the free plan, or you are exploring from a blank canvas.

UX Pilot's difference is that it generates journeys rather than screens, which sounds like a small distinction and is not.

Most AI design tools produce one beautiful screen at a time, and you discover the problem when you try to connect them: the states do not match, the navigation is inconsistent, and half the flow is missing. UX Pilot generates connected user journeys from a single prompt, so what you get is a flow with its screens rather than screens in search of a flow.

It also produces validation signals that no other tool in this category offers: predictive heatmaps that estimate where attention will land, and accessibility scanning. That lets you interrogate a design before you have recruited a single participant. It also gives engineering a genuine starting point rather than a reference image. For teams already deploying on Vercel with Next.js, the path from prototype to production is unusually short.

Where it struggles: you get code, which means someone must be comfortable looking at it when something breaks. It is frontend-focused, so anything requiring real backend logic pushes you elsewhere. And it produces components rather than a designed system, so visual consistency across a larger product still needs a designer.

Best for: validating data-heavy interfaces, teams with React engineers, prototypes that need to handle real content.

For a founder testing whether people will complete a signup and come back, or a product team validating a workflow that only makes sense with saved data, that is the fastest route to a testable artifact that exists.

It is worth being clear about what this is. It is not a UX prototyping tool and it is not competing with Figma. It is a way of producing a functional prototype, at a fidelity level the traditional tools cannot reach, for the specific class of questions that need it.

Where it struggles: credit-based pricing means iterative debugging gets expensive quickly, and users routinely report a $25 plan becoming a $60 to $80 month once hosting and top-ups are counted. Design output is good but generic. Code quality degrades on larger projects, which is why the common pattern is to build the first 70 percent here and finish elsewhere.

Miro is on this list positioned honestly, which means not at the top.

It is an outstanding collaborative canvas and it is not a prototyping tool. Where it earns its place is the stage before prototyping, which is also the stage most teams rush: mapping the user journey, running the workshop, clustering the research, agreeing what the flow should be at all. Doing that badly is why so many prototypes answer the wrong question.

Its AI features generate and organise ideas directly on the board, and it connects to Figma, Jira, and most of the surrounding stack, so decisions made on the canvas carry into the work.

Ranking Miro as the best rapid prototyping tool, as several lists do, mostly tells you something about affiliate arrangements. Ranking it as the best tool for the thinking that precedes prototyping is accurate and more useful.

Best for: journey mapping, workshops, research synthesis, roadmap alignment.

Skip it if: you need a clickable, testable artifact. That is not what it makes.

Tools to remove from your shortlist

This section exists because several widely shared prototyping roundups, including ones updated in 2026, still recommend products that are gone. If you are comparing lists, check these first.

InVision. Shut down permanently. InVision ended its design collaboration services on December 31, 2024, and deleted all prototypes, boards, specs, assets, and Design System Manager libraries shortly afterwards, including for enterprise customers. Freehand was sold to Miro separately and lives on there. Any 2026 article recommending InVision as a prototyping option has not been checked.

Adobe XD. Effectively end of life. After the $20 billion Figma acquisition was blocked by EU and UK regulators, Adobe confirmed in early 2024 that it would not invest further in XD. It is no longer sold standalone to new customers and remains available only to some existing Creative Cloud subscribers with no meaningful feature development.
